Why Are So Many Children Getting Asthma?
By Deborah Mumm

Go to any grade school or high school sporting event! Take a peek at the sideline bench and note how many inhalers you see. Did you know that the number one reason children miss school is asthma? Why the explosion of asthma and respiratory problems in children?
4 Reasons Respiratory Problems are on the Rise!

1) ‘Couch Potato Generation’ – kids weigh more, exercise less and spend more time indoors.
2) Too much antibiotic use - Immune systems never get much opportunity to fight infections, and then react abnormally to airborne contaminants.
3) Air Pollution – Pollution does not cause asthma but can be a trigger for an attack. Cars and factories now have stricter controls on emissions but the problem is still there.
4) Indoor Air Pollution – 20 years ago no one ever heard of Indoor Pollution! Since the Energy Crisis in the 70’s, buildings became more energy efficient. This meant all pollutants became trapped inside. Many of the items we furnish our home and school with are outgassing contaminants continually. Carpeting, curtains, cleaning products, particleboard furniture and more! With people spending 90-% of their days indoors, this becomes a problem!

7 Things You Can Do To Protect Your Kids from Allergy & Asthma Reactions!

1) Watch for days when pollen counts are high and restrict vigorous exercise on hot days.
2) Avoid Wood Stoves and fireplaces in the home and NEVER allow smoking in the home of an asthmatic.
3) Keep pets out of the bedrooms.
4) Make sure kitchen, bathrooms, and basement are well ventilated to cut down on mold in humidity.
5) Put pillows and mattresses in allergen-impermeable covers to cut down exposure to dust mites.
6) Use non-toxic cleaning products and avoid perfumes and scented products.
7) A filter-less air purifier is highly recommended since a filter can only capture a small portion of allergens.

    Kerry Speaks With Judy Woodruff
via John Kerry for President 2008: Do we cover children with insurance who are not getting immunizations for diseases that we know we've cured, who don't get medicine for asthma? One out of three kids doesn't get medicine for asthma. Do we cover them or do we give millionaires a tax cut? That's the values choice for America.

Why Do We Get Company When The House Is Dirty?
I swear, it always happens, people show up when your house is messy. My next door neighbor came over to let us know they were having a prom party on sat and to give my her phone# if it got loud. I co ...

    Why Do You Paticipate?
Later this year I hope to talk about "collaborative web sites" and how to encourage participation. So I've been thinking on the topic of "how to encourage participation" or maybe "running a successful online community." I think we get a fairly decent amount of participation from a relatively eclectic group of people. Though I always think we'd benefit from more people participation, I think we do a pretty good job, all things considered. Slashcode isn't the easiest thing in the world to use, and I think that's probably one big barrier to entry. But I don't want to focus on why people don't participate (right now) but rather on why you do choose to participate.I'm very curious about what motivates you to participate on LISNews. Why do you suggest stories? Why do you post comments? Why do you use your journal? What attracted you to LISNews in the first place?

Why do people think Nintendo is geared towards children?
I just can't figure out why Nintendo has trouble attracting mature gamers. This really shows how Nintendo is doing a fantastic job of broadening its consumer base and reaching out to adult gamers as well as children. (Click on the characters to see what I mean)

    Why do players do that?
I don't get it - why does a team that's up by nine goals start goading the losing team? I understand why the team that's losing gets chippy and frustrated, but why would a team that's up, games away from the playoffs, do stupid stuff like that? Finally, a game I was scheduled to center, and it turned into a pretty one-sided affair - 10-1 one-sided. The first goal was scored a mere 45 seconds into the game, then they never scored again. The game was pretty easy - I felt like I was keeping up with play quite well, and I didn't feel bad about what happened (it was only one card, for the player making faces at the other player - did I mention it was extremely juvenile?). I just don't get it.
